Astroverse Experience Pvt. Ltd., through its astro-tourism wing Astrostops, conducted a unique celestial navigation and space science session for the Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army in Ranikhet, Uttarakhand — merging astronomy, robotics, and hands-on STEM learning with military training.
Teaching the Art of Star Navigation
Far away from city lights, in the peaceful hills of Ranikhet, we shared an old but powerful skill — navigating using the stars. Soldiers learned how to spot constellations like Saptarishi (Ursa Major), Orion, and the guiding light of Dhruv Tara (the Pole Star).
In tough terrains where GPS might not work, these ancient navigation methods can still come in handy. 🌠 This was a beautiful mix of science, tradition, and real-life use, and the soldiers were incredibly curious and enthusiastic to learn.
Honouring Those Who Serve
This unique event was attended by Agniveer trainees, India’s newly inducted recruits undergoing a transformative four-year military journey. As part of their official training module, they were introduced to space science concepts that could prove vital in real-world, on-ground scenarios.
The evening included:
Celestial Navigation Training: Soldiers learned how to identify and navigate using prominent constellations like Saptarishi (Ursa Major), Orion, and Dhruv Tara (Pole Star) — essential for survival in high-altitude or signal-dead zones.
Hydrorocket Launch Demonstration: A high-energy live demo of water-powered rockets, showing the physics of propulsion in a fun and hands-on manner.
Mars Rover & Robotics Demonstration: Our team showcased how robotic systems can be used for remote navigation and exploration — linking Earth-based military operations with concepts used in planetary missions.
This wasn’t just about stargazing — it was a cutting-edge training experience designed to equip soldiers with critical thinking and navigation tools rooted in nature, science, and innovation.
